Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandpa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to pickup anything he could about poker. He would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the negative comments from other people annihilate his ambition of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
Phil started competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to dedication and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every single day and is very abashed about his achievements. Phil knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
