by Raegan on August 25th, 2012
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker player in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. He would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative comments from others destroy his ambition of becoming one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
He began playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and a continuing love for poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every single day and is very humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors every single game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a normal basis.
