Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked participating in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The definite improvement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world today. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
