Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup anything he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the adverse feedback from others annihilate his ambition of becoming one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
Phil started competing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated a number of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He says that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly humble about his success. He knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Even though Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a regular basis.
